Former senator and scholar-politician, Sandy Ojang Onor, has officially joined the race for Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election after purchasing the presidential nomination form of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Onor, who represented Cross River Central Senatorial District in the National Assembly from 2019 to 2023, obtained the form at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja, signalling an early start to the PDP’s internal contest ahead of the next general election.
His move makes him one of the first aspirants to formally declare interest in the PDP presidential ticket, as the opposition party intensifies preparations for its primary election scheduled for May 2027.
Party guidelines indicate that aspirants are required to pay about ₦51 million for the nomination form, part of broader preparations following the commencement of form sales earlier this year.
Onor, a historian and academic with a PhD background, was also the PDP governorship candidate in Cross River State during the 2023 elections. His entry into the presidential race is expected to reshape early permutations within the party, particularly amid ongoing alignments among key political blocs.
Political analysts say more aspirants are likely to join the race in the coming months as the PDP positions itself to challenge the ruling party in the 2027 general elections.
