Nigeria’s ambition to host the 15th African Games in 2031 has gained fresh momentum following the arrival of the African Union Sports Council (AUSC) evaluation team, which has commenced a detailed assessment of the country’s preparedness for the continental showpiece.
The visiting delegation was formally received by the National Sports Commission as part of the official bid process, marking a major step in Nigeria’s quest to stage Africa’s biggest multi-sport event.
During the visit, the AUSC team is expected to conduct an extensive inspection of major sporting venues, transportation networks, accommodation facilities, and other critical infrastructure required to host the Games. The assessment will also focus on Nigeria’s technical capacity, organisational framework, and compliance with established continental standards for hosting the prestigious event.
Officials say the inspection is a decisive phase in the selection process, as technical experts evaluate whether the country can successfully deliver a competition of such scale.
Nigeria’s bid is being driven by a broader vision that goes beyond the hosting rights, with authorities projecting long-term gains in sports infrastructure, youth development, tourism, and job creation.
The commission noted that the bid aligns with ongoing efforts to reposition sports as a major contributor to national growth and economic development.
With a strong record of hosting international sporting events and renewed investment in sports facilities across the country, Nigeria is presenting itself as a capable and strategic destination for the 2031 Games.
Leadership of the commission expressed confidence in the country’s chances, insisting that Nigeria possesses the experience, resources, and institutional strength needed to deliver a memorable and world-class tournament.
Beyond the competition itself, officials said the country’s focus is on creating a lasting legacy that will strengthen African sports development and inspire the next generation of athletes across the continent.
