The African Democratic Congress faction led by David Mark has strongly criticised the decision of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to withdraw recognition of its leadership, describing the move as politically motivated.

Reacting to the electoral body’s position on Wednesday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, said the commission’s interpretation of the recent Court of Appeal ruling was unacceptable and inconsistent with the facts surrounding the matter.

According to him, the party believes INEC acted under pressure from forces within government who are uncomfortable with the growing strength and visibility of the opposition party. He argued that the development reflects an attempt to weaken opposition voices and tilt the political space toward one-party dominance.

Abdullahi maintained that the commission’s statement contained contradictions and failed to reflect the true meaning of the appellate court’s decision. He accused INEC of abandoning neutrality and aligning itself with the interests of the ruling establishment rather than the democratic process.

The party spokesman further disclosed that the ADC is currently reviewing available legal and political options and will make its next course of action known in due time.

He also appealed to party faithful and supporters across the country to remain calm and steadfast as the situation unfolds, expressing confidence that the party would emerge stronger from the crisis.

Earlier on Wednesday, INEC announced that it would suspend recognition of both the David Mark-led faction and the group loyal to Rafiu Bala pending the final determination of the case before the Federal High Court. The commission also stated that it would no longer receive official correspondence from either camp or monitor conventions, congresses, and meetings organised by the rival groups.

As part of the decision, INEC said the names of members of the National Working Committee led by David Mark would be removed from its official portal following its review of the Court of Appeal judgment delivered on March 12.

The leadership crisis stems from a suit filed by Rafiu Bala, a former deputy chairman of the party, who challenged the legitimacy of the caretaker committee headed by David Mark.
