Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, the 2023 vice-presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has announced plans to exit the party and join the Peoples Redemption Party, in a move that could reshape opposition politics ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Baba-Ahmed disclosed this on Tuesday during an appearance on Politics Today, a programme on Channels Television, stating that his resignation from the Labour Party would take effect at midnight on Wednesday.

According to him, the decision was driven by internal disagreements and what he described as a departure from the party’s founding ideals. He noted that recent developments within the party had made his continued membership untenable.

“I am leaving the Labour Party… what the party stood for then is no longer what it is today,” he said, confirming that the PRP would be his next political destination.

Baba-Ahmed, who ran alongside Peter Obi in the 2023 presidential election, added that the PRP’s long-standing political history and ideological foundation influenced his decision to join the party.

The PRP, originally founded by the late Aminu Kano, is regarded as one of Nigeria’s oldest political movements with a reputation for progressive ideology.

Political analysts say the development signals deepening cracks within the Labour Party and may alter the configuration of opposition alliances as preparations intensify for the 2027 elections.
