A Federal High Court in Kaduna has scheduled April 14, 2026, for its decision on the bail application filed by former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, who is currently facing allegations of financial misconduct and abuse of office.
The court fixed the date after hearing final submissions from both the defence and the prosecution during proceedings held on Wednesday.
Counsel to the former governor, Iyamu Oyewole, urged the court to grant bail, stressing that it is a constitutional entitlement of every accused person. He further argued that El-Rufai has established roots within Nigeria and poses no flight risk.
However, counsel for the prosecution opposed the application, insisting that releasing the former governor at this stage could jeopardize the ongoing investigation. According to the prosecution, there are concerns that he may interfere with witnesses or influence the course of the case.
After listening to arguments from both sides, the presiding judge, Justice Rilwan Aikawa, announced that the court would deliver its ruling on April 14.
Pending that decision, the court ordered that El-Rufai remain in the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).
The former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory arrived at the court premises around 9:00 a.m. under heavy security presence, as supporters, political associates, and other observers gathered in anticipation of the hearing.
Security around the court complex was significantly reinforced ahead of the session, reflecting the high-profile nature of the case.
El-Rufai had, through his legal team, submitted the bail application on Tuesday as proceedings in the matter continue.
