A civil society group, the Nigeria Democratic Rights Advocacy (NDRA), has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to investigate an alleged breach of Nigeria’s Electoral Act involving the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) and the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
In a statement issued on Monday, the coalition alleged that a legal practitioner is simultaneously representing both political parties in a manner that raises concerns about possible dual affiliation, which is prohibited under Nigeria’s electoral laws. The group argued that such an arrangement, if proven, could undermine the integrity of party structures and electoral processes.
According to the NDRA, the revised Electoral Act clearly forbids individuals from maintaining membership in more than one political party at the same time. The coalition stressed that any violation of this provision could attract sanctions, including disqualification from participating in party activities or elections.
“We are urging INEC to thoroughly investigate this matter and clarify whether the individuals involved are acting within the bounds of the law,” the statement read. “The credibility of Nigeria’s democratic system depends on strict adherence to electoral guidelines.”
Reacting to the development, INEC acknowledged receipt of concerns from stakeholders and reiterated its commitment to enforcing the provisions of the Electoral Act. The commission noted that it would review any formal petition submitted and take appropriate action based on its findings.
INEC also emphasized that political parties are expected to maintain accurate membership records and ensure compliance with legal requirements, including the prohibition of dual party membership.
Legal experts say the issue may hinge on whether the individual in question holds formal membership in both parties or is merely providing professional services as a lawyer, which may not necessarily constitute a violation under the law.
As of the time of filing this report, neither the APM nor the NDC had issued an official response to the allegations. Observers note that the outcome of any investigation could have broader implications for party accountability and electoral transparency ahead of future elections.
