Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has clarified why he attended the wedding ceremony of reality TV personality Ikechukwu Okonkwo, popularly known as Cross, in Abuja.
The high-profile white wedding, held over the weekend, attracted a mix of celebrities, political figures, and close associates, highlighting the intersection of entertainment and politics in Nigeria’s social scene.
In a statement shared via his official social media account, Atiku revealed that his attendance was driven by a personal relationship with the groom, whom he described as his “godson.” He noted that the occasion also reflected the longstanding bond between their families.
According to the former vice president, he travelled directly from Ibadan – where he had participated in a National Opposition Summit – to Abuja to attend the ceremony.
“Upon my arrival from Ibadan… I proceeded directly to the wedding of my godson… The occasion provided an opportunity to reflect on the strong bond between our families,” he said while congratulating the couple and wishing them a fulfilling married life.
The event, described as star-studded, featured several former Big Brother Naija housemates and notable personalities. Cross, who gained fame during the 2021 “Shine Ya Eye” edition of the reality show, has remained prominent in Nigeria’s entertainment industry.
Observers also noted that Cross had previously shown support for Atiku during the 2023 presidential election, adding a subtle political undertone to the gathering.
The wedding marks the final stage of the couple’s marital rites, following earlier engagement, traditional, and civil ceremonies held between late 2025 and early 2026.
Overall, Atiku’s presence at the ceremony underscores both personal ties and the growing overlap between Nigeria’s political and entertainment spheres.
