The 2023 governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Adamawa State, Aishatu Dahiru, has officially joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), marking a significant shift in the country’s evolving political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Binani’s defection was confirmed during a formal engagement with party leaders in Abuja, where she was received into the NDC fold. The move comes months after her exit from the APC and a brief stint with the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Speaking on her decision, the former senator said her move was influenced by both her supporters and her assessment of the party’s structure and guiding principles. She noted that the NDC’s emphasis on policy-driven governance and internal democracy aligned with her political vision.

Binani also stressed the role of her grassroots base in shaping her political direction, explaining that many of her supporters had already aligned with the NDC before her formal declaration.

Her defection follows internal disagreements within the ADC, where her faction had earlier raised concerns over alleged lack of internal democracy and leadership disputes, eventually leading to a mass exit by her loyalists.

Leaders of the NDC have welcomed her entry, describing it as a major boost to the party’s strength, particularly in the North-East region. Political observers say the development could reshape alliances ahead of the 2027 elections, especially as opposition parties continue to reposition.

Binani, who represented Adamawa Central in the Senate from 2019 to 2023, was a prominent contender in the state’s 2023 governorship race. Her latest political move is expected to influence the dynamics of party politics in Adamawa and beyond as preparations for the next election cycle intensify.
