In what observers describe as a significant political shift ahead of the 2027 general elections, members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) across the 17 Local Government Areas of Yobe State, alongside the Arewa Strategic Implementation Group for Atiku (ASIGA), have resolved to defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The decision was reportedly reached during a strategic stakeholders’ meeting held in Yobe State, where members unanimously called on Prof. Muhammad Ibrahim Jawa to lead the mass defection into the APC.
According to participants at the meeting, the move followed extensive consultations among political actors and grassroots mobilisers who argued that aligning with the APC would better position the region for political inclusion and developmental opportunities ahead of the next electoral cycle.
Leaders of the groups described the planned defection as a “collective political decision” aimed at strengthening northern participation within the ruling party and consolidating support for the current administration’s policies and programmes.
Sources within the coalition stated that the endorsement of Prof. Jawa to coordinate the transition was based on his leadership credentials, political experience, and longstanding engagement with grassroots political structures across Northern Nigeria.
The development is expected to alter the political landscape in Yobe State, particularly within opposition circles, as analysts predict that the movement of ADC members and Atiku-aligned supporters into the APC could reshape existing alliances ahead of future elections.
While officials of the ADC are yet to issue a formal response to the development, APC stakeholders in the state have reportedly welcomed the move, describing it as evidence of growing confidence in the ruling party’s national agenda.
Political observers say the latest realignment reflects the intensifying consultations and coalition-building efforts already taking shape across the country as political parties and interest groups position themselves for the 2027 contests.
