Former Governor of Kano State and the New Nigeria People’s Party’s presidential flagbearer in the 2023 elections, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has formally ended his association with the party.

In a statement issued on March 29, 2026, Kwankwaso confirmed that his resignation takes effect immediately, describing the decision as a strategic step in response to the evolving nature of Nigeria’s political environment.

He noted that his departure forms part of a wider political recalibration, driven by recent developments and emerging realities within the nation’s democratic space.

Kwankwaso expressed gratitude to the NNPP for the confidence reposed in him, particularly the privilege of serving as its National Leader and representing the party in the 2023 presidential contest.

He admitted that stepping away from the platform was a difficult choice, but stressed that present political circumstances demand a new alignment with a movement he considers more capable of delivering genuine transformation.

The former presidential candidate stated that his next political direction would be guided by the desire to advance purposeful leadership and meaningful national progress.

His resignation is already generating intense political speculation, with observers closely watching for indications of his next move ahead of upcoming electoral contests.
