President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu as Nigeria’s new Minister of Foreign Affairs following the resignation of Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar.

The development was confirmed in an official statement issued on Wednesday by the presidential spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga.

According to the statement, Tuggar stepped down from his position to pursue political ambitions ahead of the 2027 general elections, creating a vacancy at the helm of Nigeria’s foreign policy leadership.

Odumegwu-Ojukwu, who previously served as Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, is expected to assume full responsibilities as substantive minister with immediate effect. Her appointment signals continuity within the ministry, given her prior experience and familiarity with Nigeria’s diplomatic engagements.

Analysts note that her elevation comes at a critical time when Nigeria is navigating complex regional and global challenges, including economic diplomacy, security cooperation, and strengthening bilateral relations.

The presidency expressed confidence in her capacity to advance Nigeria’s foreign policy objectives and maintain the country’s strategic interests on the international stage.

Further details regarding her swearing-in and policy direction are expected to be communicated by the presidency in due course.
