Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has officially forwarded the nomination of Murtala Garo to the Kano State House of Assembly for screening and confirmation as deputy governor, in a move that signals a fresh phase in Kano’s political leadership.

The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Wednesday by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad, confirming that the nomination has been transmitted to lawmakers in line with constitutional provisions.

According to the statement, the governor urged the Assembly to expedite action on the screening process to ensure continuity in governance. The nomination, officials say, followed consultations with key political stakeholders across the state.

Multiple reports confirm that the deputy governorship seat became vacant after the resignation of the former occupant in March 2026, prompting the governor to initiate the replacement process as stipulated under Nigeria’s constitution.

Garo, a seasoned political administrator with over two decades of experience in public service, has held several key positions, including commissioner for local government and chieftaincy affairs and chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) in Kano.

Political analysts note that his nomination could reshape the dynamics within the state executive council, especially as the administration seeks to stabilize governance following weeks of political tension surrounding the vacant office.

The Kano State House of Assembly is expected to announce a date for the screening in the coming days. If confirmed, Garo will assume office as deputy governor, filling a critical gap in the state’s leadership structure.
