The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the postponement of the planned nationwide voter revalidation exercise, stating that the process will now take place after the 2027 general elections.
The electoral body disclosed this in a statement issued on Friday in Abuja by its National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Haruna.
According to the commission, the decision followed deliberations at a meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs), where key issues relating to preparations for the next general elections were reviewed.
INEC said the voter revalidation exercise remains an essential part of its statutory responsibility to maintain a credible and updated National Register of Voters but explained that it had become necessary to reschedule the process beyond the 2027 polls.
The commission noted that the exercise is designed to verify existing voter records, correct personal details, eliminate duplicate entries, and remove the names of ineligible persons from the register.
It added that the move is intended to further strengthen the integrity of the voter database and enhance public confidence in the electoral system.
While no new date was announced for the commencement of the exercise, INEC reassured Nigerians of its commitment to credible, transparent and inclusive elections.
The development is expected to generate reactions from political parties, civil society organisations and other stakeholders, especially as preparations gradually build toward the 2027 electoral cycle.
