Preparations have intensified for Nigeria’s participation in the 2026 CAC African Track and Para-Track Cycling Championships, with the country’s leading cyclists set to battle for selection at the forthcoming National Track Championships.
The championships, which will serve as the official selection event for Team Nigeria, are expected to bring together top riders from across the country in a highly competitive contest aimed at identifying the nation’s finest talents ahead of the continental tournament.
Scheduled to hold at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium Velodrome in Abuja, the African championships will take place in two phases. The Para-Track events are billed for May 9 to 11, while the Track Championships will follow from May 13 to 17, 2026.
The ongoing preparatory phase is considered a crucial step in building a formidable Nigerian squad, as athletes undergo rigorous performance assessments and competitive evaluations designed to ensure only the best riders make the final team.
With Abuja preparing to welcome cyclists from across Africa, the National Sports Commission, in partnership with the Cycling Federation of Nigeria, is intensifying efforts to present a strong, well-drilled, and merit-driven national contingent.
Officials say the exercise is focused not only on talent discovery but also on ensuring that Team Nigeria is fully prepared to compete favourably on home soil.
The forthcoming championships are expected to further boost Nigeria’s profile in continental cycling and reinforce the country’s readiness to host major international sporting events.
