A serving governor elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is reportedly facing a difficult decision as negotiations over a possible switch to the All Progressives Congress (APC) have become complicated by strict conditions.

According to sources familiar with the talks, the governor has recently opened discussions with senior figures of the ruling party in Abuja as part of efforts to finalize plans to defect. While some national leaders of the APC appear willing to accommodate the move, party stakeholders in the governor’s state are said to be less enthusiastic.

Local APC leaders reportedly believe the party already has strong prospects of winning the governorship in the next election without the governor’s support. As a result, they are said to have pushed for conditions that significantly limit the governor’s influence should he join the party.

One of the key terms reportedly presented to him is that he would not automatically become the leader of the APC in the state after defecting. In addition, he may not have the authority to determine who succeeds him in office. Instead, the decision on the party’s next governorship candidate would be made collectively with existing APC stakeholders.

Sources also indicated that the governor’s loyalists would not receive preferential treatment in the party’s primaries ahead of the 2027 elections. This means his political allies may have to compete with established APC members for party tickets.

The development has reportedly unsettled many within the governor’s political camp. While they initially supported the move to the ruling party, the conditions have raised concerns about their future political relevance.

One insider explained that if the arrangement stands, the governor may only be guaranteed a senatorial ticket in the next election cycle, leaving many of his supporters without clear opportunities to contest elective positions.

The uncertainty has sparked internal debate among the governor’s allies, with some urging him to abandon the defection plan altogether and remain in the PDP to prepare for the next electoral contest.

Political observers note that the state involved has a history of shifting party loyalty between election cycles, which has intensified competition among potential governorship aspirants within the APC.

At the national level, further defections could deepen the challenges facing the PDP, which has already seen several governors leave the party since the 2023 general elections.
