The African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Kaduna State has condemned what it described as the targeted intimidation of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir el-Rufai, and other opposition figures, alleging that the Federal Government is using state institutions to silence dissenting voices.

Speaking during a press briefing in Kaduna on Tuesday, party leaders said the reported actions against opposition members appear to be politically driven and capable of weakening Nigeria’s democratic process.

The party warned that persistent pressure on opposition leaders could damage public confidence in government and threaten the nation’s democratic stability.

ADC officials also urged civil society organisations, as well as the international community, to pay close attention to political developments in Kaduna State and across the country.

Addressing journalists on behalf of the party, Prof. Sani Bello said recent events suggest a disturbing trend marked by the misuse of public institutions, a disregard for due process, and a gradual decline in democratic standards.

According to him, the moves against el-Rufai, whom the party described as a major opposition voice, appear designed to tarnish his image and reduce his political influence.

The ADC further alleged that major federal agencies, including the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, and the Department of State Services, are being improperly deployed in the matter.

The party maintained that despite ongoing actions involving el-Rufai and some of his associates, the relevant agencies have yet to present what it considers credible evidence to justify the measures.
