The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has called for deeper cooperation between the police and journalists, emphasizing the importance of mutual respect and professionalism in strengthening public trust and national development.
Speaking on Saturday at the congress of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Federal Capital Territory Council in Abuja, the police chief praised journalists for their role in keeping citizens informed and contributing to democratic accountability.
Disu noted that the media remains a vital partner in nation-building and should be accorded the respect due to professionals in the field.
He stressed that journalists should never be treated with disdain, describing them as key players in shaping public opinion and ensuring transparency in governance.
The IGP also encouraged both law enforcement officers and members of the media to act responsibly in their duties, pointing out that professionalism from both sides would foster stronger relationships and improve communication on security issues.
Responding at the event, the NUJ FCT Council Chairperson, Grace Ike, congratulated Disu on his appointment and described him as a long-time ally of the media.
She expressed confidence in his leadership and assured the police chief that journalists in the territory would continue to work closely with the police to provide balanced and responsible reporting on security matters.
Ike further reiterated the council’s commitment to ethical journalism and pledged continued support for initiatives aimed at enhancing security and governance within the capital.
She also disclosed that the IGP would be invited as a special guest during the council’s planned 2026 Press Week activities.
